When a WhatsApp account is deleted and a new account is later created using the same phone number, some customers who already had a previous conversation with that number may encounter a specific problem:
the customer still has the old conversation in WhatsApp;
the phone number is still the same;
however, when trying to send a new message, WhatsApp may indicate that the number does not have WhatsApp;
in some cases, the option to invite the contact to use WhatsApp appears.
This can happen even if the new account is working normally and can receive messages from new contacts.
According to the guidance received from Meta support, this behavior is related to the cache and local contact records stored on the customer's device.
The information the app uses to identify whether a particular number has an active account may remain outdated on the customer's device after the account is deleted and recreated.
Therefore, the problem does not necessarily mean that:
o número esteja bloqueado;
o WABA esteja com problema;
a conta esteja restrita;
o número esteja sem WhatsApp;
Utilize o formato:
Replace the number with the company’s official number, always using the country code and area code, without spaces, parentheses, hyphens, or other characters.
When opening the wa.me link, the customer is taken directly to a conversation with that number.
This allows the customer to try to start the conversation without relying exclusively on the old record stored in the contacts/conversations app.
For this reason, Meta recommends using the link as a scalable way to restore access for affected customers.
The goal is to ensure that the customer has access to the link even if the old conversation is experiencing the issue.
You don’t need to contact every customer individually. Ideally, share the official WhatsApp link on the company’s main communication channels.
Add a button such as:
Contact us on WhatsApp
The button should open the link directly:
https://wa.me/SEUNUMERO
It is also recommended to make the link available on important pages, such as:
home page;
contact page;
footer;
support page;
product or service pages.
Update the WhatsApp link in the company profile bio.
It can also be used in:
Stories;
Highlights;
posts;
ads;
customer replies.
WhatsApp’s own Status feature can also be used to share the new access link.
Post a message letting people know that support is continuing as usual, and provide a direct link to start a conversation.
Example:
Our WhatsApp is still working as usual!
If you’re having trouble starting a conversation with us from the old chat history, use the link below to contact our team directly:
This is especially useful because customers who can still view the company profile or Status can receive the instructions directly in WhatsApp.
Add WhatsApp to the page's contact channels and, where appropriate, share the link in posts and communications with customers.
Include the link in:
email signatures;
customer service messages;
order confirmations;
commercial communications;
newsletters;
support messages.
Example:
Need to talk to us on WhatsApp?
Click here to start a new conversation:
https://wa.me/SEUNUMERO
The same link can be shared on any channel used by the company, for example:
Google Business Profile;
SMS;
customer service pages;
internal systems;
business proposals;
documents sent to customers;
advertising campaigns;
company communication materials.
When a customer reports that the old WhatsApp account appears to be nonexistent or offers the option to invite them, send them the company’s official link directly.
Suggested message:
Our WhatsApp number remains the same, but the account was updated, and on some devices, the app may retain outdated information about the number.
To start a new conversation with us, go directly to this link:
This lets you contact us directly using our updated number.
After recreating a WhatsApp account using the same number, we recommend:
Confirm that the new WhatsApp is working normally.
Create the official wa.me link for the number.
Update the company website and official profiles.
Add the link to email signatures.
Post the link in WhatsApp Status.
Share the link on the other channels used by customers.
Individually advise customers who report the problem to use the link.
Keep the link permanently available on official channels.
This reduces reliance on WhatsApp's automatic synchronization and creates an alternative way for previous customers to start a new conversation.
This behavior may be caused by the local WhatsApp cache/synchronization on the customer's device.
Therefore, recreating the account, changing the WABA, or making changes to the integration should not be treated as the first solution for this symptom.
The recommendation is to keep the current account running and direct affected customers to the direct conversation link, while WhatsApp performs its own background synchronizations.
The direct conversation link is especially important because it allows the company to continue providing access to support even when the customer's app still displays outdated information about the number.
Number recreated → some devices retain outdated information → customer believes the number does not have WhatsApp → sharing the wa.me link provides a direct way to start the conversation.
This is the solution recommended by Meta to make access recovery scalable, since Meta cannot remotely force an update of the cache stored on customers' devices.
